'Cloud Atlas', 'Chasing Mavericks' and more: Movie review roundup ...

The long-awaited ?Cloud Atlas? hits theaters this weekend, and the three-hour, time-jumping, science-fiction epic is likely to provoke awe, ridicule, and everything in between. ?With a cast featuring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, and three directors (the Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer), it?s a unique mixture of big-budget action and heady philosophizing.?

Less revolutionary fare on tap includes the fact-based surfing tale ?Chasing Mavericks? and a scathing documentary look at the War on Drugs, ?The House I Live In.?

The Northwest Film Center will be screening Russian director Aleksandr Sokurov?s version of the ?Faust? legend, while the third annual Humanist Film Festival is covered in this week?s ?Indie & Arthouse? column.
