Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has said he will consider his England future after this summer's European Championships.

The 31-year-old, who has won 89 caps, has been hit by injuries over the last two seasons and, while he admits he loves playing for his country, he knows calling time on the international stage could help prolong his club career.

He said in The People: "It's something I am going to have to sit down and think about after the Euros this summer."

He added: "I've not spoken to anybody about it yet, nor have I made any decision about what I might I do because there are a lot of things to consider.

"I'm just fully focused on doing as well as I can for Liverpool this season and then playing in the Euros for England. After that we will see that happens.

"First and foremost is that I love playing for England and to captain your country is the pinnacle for any player so that makes me proud," added Gerrard, who captained England during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

"And I want to make this clear, when I do decide to stop playing international football it would never be because I don't want to play for my country - it would never be because of that.

"But I am aware of the future, the injuries I've had and I want to play for Liverpool for as long as I can. I also know there are quite a few players who have stopped playing international football to prolong their club careers and it's helped them to do that.

"I can understand why people might think that kind of a decision is approaching and I've spoken to my surgeon and the medical people but, like I say, I've not made any decisions because there is no need yet."

First Horses Shrunk by Warming Climate

The sizes of the earliest equines followed the ancient temperatures through major climate change, adding evidence to a centuries-old evolutionary theory

The first horses in North America would not have been able to hold their own in the Triple Crown. At just about 5.6 kilograms the Sifrhippus sandrae hoofed onto the scene some 56 million years ago about the size of a small dog.

But then a funny thing happened. In the next 130,000 years during the Paleocene?Eocene Thermal Maximum, these small equines got even smaller, reaching the tiny size of 3.9 kilograms?some 30 percent lighter than their initial heft. Just 45,000 years later, however, the genus had bulked up to seven kilograms. And the horses were not the only ones. Many other mammals in the area followed the same pattern.

These animals' sizes likely resulted from relatively rapid climate change, suggest the authors of a new study published online Thursday in Science.

The study "highlights the importance of temperature on evolution?particularly mammal evolution," says Felisa Smith, a professor of biology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, who wrote an essay on the findings in the same issue of Science. And it adds a new high-resolution tracking of body size and temperature during a crucial?and long puzzling?time in geologic history.

Looking the small horse in the mouth
The researchers did not have complete skeletons to measure for all of the animals, so to track the size of the horses over time they looked at their teeth?in particular, their molars. "It turns out that teeth are much better than femurs," Smith says. A leg bone "does tell you something about size, but teeth are much better." And as far as teeth go, she says, "the best thing to know is the area of the first molar."

The teeth came from a fossil-rich area called Cabin Fork in Wyoming and are part of a substantial collection at the University of Florida built in part by study co-author Jonathan Bloch, an associate curator of vertebrate paleontology there. From the collection, the research team could estimate the size of about 44 diminutive adult horses.

Some 40 percent of other mammals in the area seem to have experienced similar shrinking and subsequent growth, notes co-author Ross Secord, a vertebrate paleontologist at the University of Nebraska?Lincoln. They stuck with the small horses, however, because they had much more solid records from which to accurately date the samples.

The researchers used oxygen isotopes left by freshwater in the fossils to track mean annual temperature from when the animals had been alive. In particular, they sampled the isotopes from teeth of a large, water-dwelling mammal Coryphodon. With these isotope readings, "you get a little, tiny window as to what the temperature was at that time," Smith says.

This close reading has excited Smith and others who have been tracking animal size over the ages. "Although we knew that temperature might set a maximum for body size," Smith says, the new findings actually present a mechanism?and do so in a very detailed manner, showing "how animals responded to a particular temperature at a particular place at a particular time."

Preparation Time:? 10 mins.
Cooking Time:? 10 mins.
Serves: 12 to 15.

Ingredients:

• 4 large apples
• 4 tbsp sugar
• 1 tbsp lemon juice
• 1 cup orange squash (approx.)
• 6 bottles lemonade
• 1 bottle soda

Method:

1. Chill the lemonade and soda bottles.
2. Peel and cut the apples into big pieces.
3. Add the sugar, lemon juice and 1 teacup of water and put to cook.
4. When cooked, blend in a liquidiser.
5. Just before serving, add the orange squash and the chilled lemonade and soda and mix well.
6. Serve ice-cold with chopped fruit and crushed ice.

To serve:
chopped mixed fruits (seasonal)
crushed ice

Elusive planet Mercury shines bright in evening sky next week

The planet Mercury is often cited as the most difficult of the five brightest naked-eye planets to see. I've always thought this was a bad rap because there are some times during the year when Mercury is surprisingly easy to see.

Mercury is called an "inferior planet" because its orbit is nearer to the sun than that of the Earth. Since it always appears from our vantage point to be in the same general direction as the sun, relatively few people have set eyes on it. There is even a rumor that the famed scientist Copernicus, living in northern Poland, never saw it.

Yet the planet Mercury is not really that hard to spot in the night sky. You simply must know when and where to look, have a night of good weather, and find a clear western horizon.

And for those living in the Northern Hemisphere, we're about to move into a very fine "window of opportunity" for seeing Mercury in the evening sky. That window, which will open on Feb. 22 and close after March 12, will provide several good opportunities to see this so-called "elusive planet" with your own eyes. The sky map of Mercury with this column shows how it will appear on Feb. 22 alongside the bright planets Venus and Jupiter.

How to see Mercury
First, a tip for reference: Remember that held at arm's length, your fist measures about 10 degrees in width so you can use it to make a reasonable estimate of degrees either horizontally or vertically.

Your first chance at sighting of Mercury will come this Wednesday (Feb. 22). About a half hour after sunset, look about 10 degrees to the left of due west and sitting side by side by side 6 degrees above the horizon will be Mercury and the moon, only about a day past new phase. Scanning that area of the sky with binoculars will aid your search.

Mercury becomes more elusive
In the evenings that follow, Mercury will diminish in brightness ? slowly at first. But the planet will also be arriving at its greatest eastern point, 18 degrees to the east of the sun, on March 5. This is Mercury's best eastern apparition in 2012, although the elongation angle itself is less than the other two.

In mid-twilight, about 45 minutes after sunset from the latitude 40 degrees north, Mercury will be situated far below and to the right of the far-more brilliant Venus and will appear 9 degrees above the horizon, nearly due west. By this time, Mercury will have faded in magnitude to -0.3 ? only about half as bright as it appeared on Feb.22, and yet perhaps easier to see as it will appear higher and be set against a somewhat darker sky.

Phases of Mercury
Mercury, like Venus, appears to go through phases like the moon. This week, just when Mercury starts appearing in the western twilight sky, it will be a nearly full disk, which is why it starts out appearing as bright as Sirius.

By the time Mercury arrives at its greatest elongation, it will appear about half-illuminated and the amount of its surface illuminated by the sun will continue to decrease in the days to come. So when it begins to turn back toward the sun's vicinity after March 5, it will fade at a rather rapid pace.

In fact, by the evening of March 12, Mercury's brightness will have dropped to magnitude +1.5; about as bright as the star Castor in Gemini and only one-twelfth as bright as it is now. In telescopes it will appear as a narrowing crescent phase. This, in all likelihood, will be your last view of it, for the combination of its rapid fading and its descent into the brighter sunset glow will finally render Mercury nearly impossible to spot as the tiny orb swings through inferior conjunction with the sun by March 21.

The legend of Mercury
In old Roman legends, Mercury was the swift-footed messenger of the gods. The planet is well named for it is the closest planet to the sun and the swiftest of the sun's family, averaging about 30 miles per second; making its yearly journey in only 88 Earth days.

Interestingly, the time it takes Mercury to rotate once on its axis is 59 days, so that all parts of its surface experience periods of intense heat and extreme cold. Although its mean distance from the sun is only 36 million miles (58 million kilometers), Mercury experiences by far the greatest range of temperatures: nearly 900 degrees Fahrenheit (482 degrees Celsius) on its day side and minus 300 F (minus 184 degrees C) on its night side.

In the pre-Christian era, Mercury actually had two names, since it was not known it could alternately appear on one side of the sun and then the other. The planet was called Mercury when in the evening sky, but was known as Apollo when it appeared in the morning. It is said that Pythagoras, about the fifth century B.C., pointed out that they were one and the same.

Big companies are also the big heavyweights when it comes to employment, according to new data released this week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

About 46 percent of Americans who work for a private company are employed by a firm with 500 or more employees, according to the most recent BLS data from March of 2011. That translates into approximately 50 million workers, the BLS said.

About 28 percent, or 30.4 million Americans, are working for a company with 49 employees or less, while about 26 percent, or 28.3 million, are working for a company with 50 to 499 employees.

The big employers also have seen the biggest growth in employment over the past two decades, according to the BLS.

As of March of 2011, the smallest companies by employee size were employing about 11 percent more people than in April of 1990, according to the data. Employment at the mid-sized firms is up 13 percent over that time period, while the largest employers have seen employment jump by 29 percent.

?The small size class is fairly flat whereas a lot of the growth is coming in the large firms,? said Nathan Clausen, an economist with the BLS.

Clausen said it doesn?t appear that growth in the bigger companies is coming from small companies getting bigger. Although that happens, he said, it?s also true that larger companies get smaller. That means they?re basically canceling each other out.

Still, he said government economists are just beginning to take a more detailed look at the data, to try to figure out what's behind these trends.

Already, they are finding some interesting things.

For example, Clausen said, in the early 1990s the leisure and hospitality industry was dominated by smaller employers. But in the mid-1990s, larger employers quickly began dominating that industry.

That makes sense to anyone who travels regularly and has seen larger hotel and other chains become much more prevalent.

Clausen said the economists also noticed that during the Internet bubble of the late 1990s and early 2000s, much of the employment growth came not from small employers but from large ones.

That may have been because the startups that got so much attention during that time were snapped up by big firms. Or it may have been because the small employers created a lot of business for the big ones by ordering their products and using their services.

Clausen noted that the data looked narrowly at jobs, so it?s not clear whether the startups were contributing more to the economy in other ways.

?Startups maybe were generating more income, but in terms of jobs ? the jobs were being created not in the startups in the large companies,? he said.

Those of you following the seemingly never-ending Internet musings about "The Dark Knight Rises" are likely very well of the fact that the biggest story surrounding the film at this point in time is whether or not audiences will be able to understand the words Tom Hardy as villainous Bane is saying through his frightening mask.

Ever since fans got an early glimpse at Hardy in the role via a sneak peek of the film's six-minute opening sequence in December, there has been growing concern and a lot of pre-emptive freaking out over the fact that we're not going to be able to understand anything Bane says.

When MTV News caught up with Hardy at the U.S. premiere of his upcoming action/romantic comedy "This Means War," we asked him how concerned he is about audiences understanding his dialogue.

"Not at all. I trust [director] Christopher Nolan implicitly. I'm not worried at all about people understanding him mumbling away," Hardy said. "But I have seen some brilliant stuff online about [my mumbling] 'Mmmm ... Batman doesn't beat up retards!,' which I thought was very funny. I enjoyed that," he said with a smile, referencing the veritable commotion his voice has made online via various analytical blog posts and the parody Twitter account @MuffledBane.

So there you have it. Trust in Christopher Nolan, people: The Oscar nominated writer/director has said as much himself.

"I think when people see the film, things will come into focus," Nolan told Entertainment Weekly recently. "Bane is very complex and very interesting," he said. "And when people see the finished film, people will be very entertained by him."

For his part, Hardy did admit that Bane's mask is pretty tight, but seems to have enjoyed the villainous aspects of the character, without getting carried away by it.

"I didn't get into a dark place at all," Hardy told Latino Review of his "brutal" and "heavy-handed" character. "A lot of dark characters are easy to have distance from. It's something I feel comfortable with, I suppose."
