Israelis are prepared ? and not ? for an Iran attack

By Martin Fletcher, NBC News correspondent

TEL AVIV ? Did you know:

  • If a bomb explodes near you with a little bang, that's a sign it is carrying chemical or biological weapons? A loud bang means a conventional warhead.
  • If an attack is chemical, you will know right away? But if it's biological you'll only find out after a few days.
  • If it is nuclear, you should lie down and cover your head? And don't get up when the first blast wave passes over you because it will be followed by a second wave.

Useful, eh?

All these facts are good to know if you are in Israel and war with Iran, and its proxies Hezbollah and Hamas, were to break out around you.

Report: Iran mulls 'pre-emptive attack' against Israel; commander warns of 'World War III'

Or if something happened with Syria, Iran's ally, which has large stockpiles of biological and conventional weapons.

With the latest opinion polls showing that half of Israelis fear for the continued existence of their state if war breaks out with Iran, and with more than half rating the chance of such a war within a year as "medium" or "high,? the more you know about what the war would entail, the better.

In an attempt to convey what he sees as a threat to Israel's existence, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a cartoon to illustrate how close he says Iran is to developing a nuclear weapon. In a speech at the United Nations General Assembly he asked the world to help stop them. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Here are some more facts:

  • If you suck a bead made of castor oil, it could kill you. It contains ricin, a lethal poison.
  • After Chernobyl, it took 25 years before Welsh sheep could be eaten because the nuclear radiation settled over Wales as it drifted most of the way round the world.
  • And cigarettes contain polonium 210, the poison used to murder the Soviet ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko.

Probably no country in the world is as prepared as Israel for such an attack, with every home built in the last 21 years possessing a mandatory bomb shelter. City centers have vast public shelters with special rooms set up for non-conventional attacks. And citizens are instructed in how to protect their bomb shelters against chemical and biological warfare.

Mistakes happen
But mistakes can happen, as I can personally attest.?

One evening in the winter of 1991 during the first Gulf War, with Iraqi Scud missiles rocketing over Jordan toward Israel, the bomb alarm sounded. My family quickly locked themselves in our bomb shelter, and I raced through the dark, silent streets to broadcast from our NBC News studio.

Israel's Netanyahu: Draw 'clear red line' to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons

This had become routine. I spent all night in the studio, responding to the many alarms, and went home around 5a.m. I didn't check on the family because I knew where the Scuds had fallen and none were near my home.

This one time, however, with 30 minutes to go before my next live broadcast hit, I had a sense that something was wrong. For the first time after an attack, I called home to see how my wife and my three sons, all aged below six, were faring.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tells the UN general assembly Thursday that sanctions are not stopping Iran's nuclear program.

No answer. I called again. No answer. Twenty-five minutes to go before my next ?live hit? on TV with Tom Brokaw. I felt sick with worry. What could have happened?

I ran downstairs, jumped into my car and raced home. I figured a 10-minute drive, five minutes at home and 10 minutes back, I'd be in the studio with seconds to spare.

Life-saving decision
Ends up, because of that calculation, I saved my family's lives.

When the all-clear sounded, my wife, our three sons, my sister-in-law and the dog, a schnauzer called Tofi, couldn't get out of the shelter.

The heavy steel lock would not budge. They hung on it and pulled and tried and tried but could not open the door. When I arrived home, about two hours after they had entered the bomb shelter, I heard faint cries of "help, help."

Instead of pushing the handle up, they had been pulling it down, locking it instead of opening it.

I was able to open the door from the outside and all was well.

But if I had stuck to my usual routine and not called home and just returned at 5 a.m., after leaving them at 8 p.m. the night before, they would have been dead.

It's simple math: An adult breathes about one cubic meter of air per hour, children more. Five people in a small room of about nine cubic meters would begin to lose air after two hours. Seven hours? They'd have all been dead.

A miracle? Sixth sense? Whatever, it's a warning of what can go wrong in times of stress. And however prepared Israelis are for what awaits them, accidents happen. When Iraq attacked Israel in 1991, far more people died of heart attacks than Scud rockets.

Country on edge
Since that time, every apartment built in Israel must have a blast-proof room that protects citizens from conventional blasts and also, with plastic and tape, can protect against chemical and biological weapons too. Walls and doors are approximately 8-12 inches thick and doors and windows are airtight.

Every citizen has, in theory, a gas mask. In practice, there aren't enough to go around.

Everybody asks, do you think there will be war with Iran? Nobody knows, and if you see Israel?s crowded cafes, the bustling streets, the crammed beaches, you may think that nobody cares.

Yet Israel is a country on edge. Most seem to have bought Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s line that the price to pay to stop Iran from building a nuclear bomb is much lower than the price to be paid if Iran has the bomb.

Fueling those thoughts are memories of what happened when the Nazis killed 6 million Jews. Today, there are approximately 6 million Jews in Israel. Few Israelis can argue against Netanyahu's insistence of: Never again.

And yet, I don't know anyone here who has prepared their bomb shelter. They're all a mess, used to store boxes, suitcases, footballs and wine. They are used as computer rooms, bicycle storage, play rooms. The attitude is, for the most part, we'll worry about it when the time comes.

Until then, live life.

Spain crisis fuels Catalan separatist sentiment

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Three weeks after a massive Catalan separatist march in Barcelona ? the biggest since the 1970s ? the independence flags still flutter from balconies across Spain's second largest city.

Spain's crushing recession has had this divisive consequence: soaring popular sentiment in Catalonia that the affluent region would be better off as separate nation.

On Thursday, regional lawmakers voted to hold a referendum for Catalonia's seven million citizens to decide whether they want to break away from Spain. The Spanish government says that the referendum would be unconstitutional. And it's unclear if the "Yes" vote would win ? even in these restless times.

But it looks more likely than ever that Catalonia may ask to go its own way.

"I have a big Catalan flag on the balcony. I put it up a week before the demonstration on Sept. 11 and it is still hanging there," said Gemma Mondon, 46, a mother of two. "I think we would be better off if we can manage our money. I think we would do much better."

Catalonia, a northeastern region that is historically one of Spain's wealthiest and most industrialized, has always harbored a strong nationalist streak. Separatism is especially entrenched in the rural towns and villages outside its more cosmopolitan capital Barcelona, where people switch between speaking Spanish and Catalan with ease and at times without even noticing.

In the peaceful transition from the Franco dictatorship to prosperous democracy, Catalans were content just to recover the freedom to openly speak, teach and publish in their own Catalan language, a right denied under Franco for over 30 years.

But now, generations-old grievances for more self-government and recognition of their culture are rising to the surface as the economic downturn bites.

Many Catalans feel their quest for a sense for nationhood has been frustrated by the intransigence of the central government in Madrid. The most recent of these clashes came in 2010 when Spain's Constitutional Court weakened the Statute of Autonomy for Catalonia, a sweeping package of laws that devolved more power to the region and would have recognized Catalonia as a nation, albeit one within Spain.

Spain's slump, which has led to a spike in unemployment and harsh austerity cuts, has proven to be the tipping point for many Catalans who used to be against or ambivalent about seeking their own state.

Mondon, who works for a family run real estate management firm, said that just over a year ago she voted "No" in a nonbinding referendum organized by pro-independence groups. Now, she says she has changed her mind.

"I always felt Spanish and Catalan and I never had the urge to be independent. A year ago I just wanted to be left alone to speak my language and raise my children in a Catalan school," said Mondon. "My attitude was 'don't bother me,' but now that has changed."

Catalonia will go to the polls on Nov. 25, with regional president Artur Mas' center-right nationalist party Convergencia i Unio expected to increase its hold of the regional parliament. Mas has said he will hold a referendum on Catalonia's self-determination, whether the Spanish government permits it or not. The date has yet to be set.

"If the Spanish government authorizes (the referendum), more the better," said Mas. "If the Spanish government turns its back on us and doesn't authorize a referendum or another type of vote, well, we will do it anyway."

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy insists the country's constitution doesn't allow a region to secede on its own, and experts say it would be virtually impossible for Catalan separatists to get it changed. Spain's Basque region, the other part of the country with a strong separatist movement, tried to get such a move approved in Parliament in 2005 but failed.

"It's not a scenario planned by the constitution," said Francisco Perez-Latre, a communications professor at the University of Navarra who has closely monitored the Catalan independence movement for years.

The new political uncertainty about the economically important region and major tourism destination is unsettling for investors already worried about Rajoy's ability to keep his country's shaky economy afloat, and within the euro currency club.

There are also doubts about how well-equipped Catalonia would be to go it alone.

Catalonia, sitting on its own mountain of debt, has in fact asked Spain for a ?5.9 billion bailout. But many Catalans argue that the region is only heavily indebted because it has to pay more than its fair due in taxes compared to services and funding it gets in return. Spain's other better-off regions also give more than they receive. Rajoy, however, has emboldened Catalan separatists by flatly rejecting demands for more power in levying tax revenues and deciding how it is spent, privileges granted to two other Spanish regions: the Basque Country and Navarra.

Rajoy's stance has combined with Spain's gloomy prospects to push Catalans who never wanted to break away from Spain before to conclude that the country itself is a failure.

"I put the Catalan flag on my balcony for the first time. Normally, I have been very discreet with my political ideas. But I think now I have to go a step further," said architect Albert Estanyol, 48, whose mother came from southern Spain. "Before, when asked about independence, I would say 'Why?' Now, I say, 'Why not?'"

Catalonia has over 800,000 unemployed, almost 22 percent of its population. That's slightly lower than Spain's national jobless rate, but the back-to-back recessions have been particularly hard on young workers in Catalonia. Since 2007, over 100,000 Catalans under 25 have lost their jobs, and the unemployment rate for workers under 25 has skyrocketed to over 50 percent, close to the national level for the same age bracket.

"I have looked for work. Since I was 18 I have had six or seven jobs, they have all been unstable, poorly paid, like filling in for two weeks at IKEA. They have had nothing to do with what I studied," said Roger Cervino, a 23-year-old who holds a degree in history.

"The economic situation is bad and one of the solutions to ending the crisis is secession. It would be complicated, but Catalonia has the capacity to reach full employment," he said. "What stops it is Spain, and above all the Spanish government, which has been a disaster."

Upstarts a big worry for the big burger chains

Yuri Gripas / Reuters file

A cheeseburger and large fries from a Five Guys restaurant is the kind of meal that's taking a bite out of the popularity of the big boys in the burger biz.

By Carol Tice, Forbes.com

?Quick: What?s the best chain burger in America?

This is not a McDonald?s vs. Burger King question. Neither of those chains even made the top 10 in a recent poll of more than 7,000 burger lovers by customer-research firm Market Force Information.

The winner was Five Guys Burgers & Fries, followed by California-based regional cult-fave In-N-Out Burger. Rounding out the top five: Fuddruckers, A&W Restaurants, and up-and-comer Smashburger (see chart below for the full list).

Forbes.com: Five Guys burgers: America?s fastest growing restaurant chain

McDonald?s, Wendy?s, and Burger King clearly aren?t the biggest burger chains because America craves their burgers most. Only two old-time chains, Carl?s Jr. and Wendy?s, managed to sneak into the lower ranks of the top 10 in terms of burger taste.

The success of these top chains hinges on four factors:

  • Habit ? Many older diners have decades of established patterns of grabbing a McDonald?s burger. They grew up with and trust the McDonald?s brand.
  • Real estate ? Diners flock to McDonald?s in large part because with more than 14,000 locations, it?s always nearby.
  • Price ? Those $1 menus really bring value-driven customers in. This is the only place McDonald?s scored well in the survey.
  • Advertising ? These chains advertise relentlessly, constantly putting their name in front of diners.

Over the next couple of decades, much of the advantage will swing to the better-burger upstarts, setting up an increasingly pitched battle for the shrinking value-burger audience. As Five Guys and other quality burger upstarts expand, that may further weaken the position of the old-time burger also-rans.

Forbes.com: Meet America?s most promising company: Smashburger

Several of the upstart better-burger chains are growing fast, including Five Guys. Soon, for many diners, a Five Guys or Smashburger might be just as easy to visit as McDonald's.

Also, these chains tend to rely, as In-N-Out always has, on word-of-mouth as their primary form of advertising. They cultivate an under-the-radar, cultish fandom rather than trying to be the brand with mass appeal. ?

?

?

?

?

Source: Market Force

The lack of big, national TV ad campaigns gives the new chains a distinct cost advantage. Combine that with above-average typical unit sales ? Whataburger?s $1.8 million per unit is higher than any top-10 competitor by sales except McDonald?s ? and you have a formula for higher profits.

Forbes.com: America?s 10 best hot dogs

The growth of the foodie movement means more people are switching to better-quality food, shrinking the audience for the lowest-common-denominator burger. The habit of eating the nearest cheap burger is fading and, as the survey put it, more and more customers are ?voting with their palates rather than their wallets.?

Demographics will also start to catch up with the legacy chains, as older diners die ? Hardening of the arteries, perhaps? ? and younger diners with less-entrenched burger habits are lured away by burgers made with better-quality ingredients.

Forbes.com: The world?s top 10 cities for street food

This could play out a couple of interesting ways for the burger stalwarts. Wendy?s, which has been struggling to join the better-burger niche, could get some traction on its strategic shift and solidify its lead on Burger King, which it passed in sales earlier this year.

Or, Burger King, Wendy?s, Jack in the Box and other old-timers could all be casualties as top operator McDonald?s ? widely acknowledged as having the best systems in all of franchising, and currently a revenue juggernaut ? becomes the last old-time burger chain left standing.

Forbes.com: The perfect hamburger, spoiled

One thing?s for sure: With Five Guys and Whataburger already ranking in the top 10 biggest chains with fewer than 1,000 stores, in a few years the discussion could be about who will survive of the better-burger contenders.

For now, though, there seems to be plenty of opportunity to simply nibble away at the core audience of the value-burger brands.

New simulation method produces realistic fluid movements

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? What does a yoghurt look like over time? The food industry will soon be able to answer this question using a new fluid simulation tool developed by the Department of Computer Science (DIKU) at the University of Copenhagen as part of a broad partnership with other research institutions. An epoch-making shift in the way we simulate the physical world is now a reality.

A five-year collaboration between the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Alexandra Institute on simulating fluids in movement is now bearing fruit, and has earned the group a 'best paper award' at the Symposium on Computer Animation (SCA).

"Our new method is a breakthrough which will radically change tomorrow's computer simulation. We have taken the first step towards producing a more precise simulation of fluid materials than anything seen so far. Now we are looking forward to testing the method on a number of other materials with soft structures," says Associate Professor Kenny Erleben from the University of Copenhagen.

Goodbye to statistical methods

The new fluid simulation tool can boast of being very similar to physical reality.

The method distinguishes itself significantly from known simulation methods which use mesh structures where the vertices are locked in a fixed position. In the new method, the mesh structure is replaced by a dynamic structure where the vertices move one at a time.

This makes it possible to take account of the fluid's physical properties more precisely and to see how different types of fluids interact with one another.

The method also ensures such a high degree of detail that even very thin structures become visible. With previous statistical methods, it is often a problem that the simulated object's edges and structures become blurred, and that its precise physical properties are hard to recreate.

Food risk assessments and shelf-life

The new dynamic simulation method paves the way for countless applications.

First, as the company backing the research, the food producer Danisco wants to use the method to simulate the shelf-life of foods, for example yoghurt.

However, the research can also be used to perform risk assessments of, for example, oil slips and within building design.

For Kenny Erleben, it will be interesting to use the method to simulate the human body, for example clothing, hair, skin and patterns of movement.

But for the time being, the method cannot be used by what has traditionally been simulation research's biggest customers: games developers. This is because the simulation is extremely time-consuming as the vertices are moved one at a time.

It often takes a couple of minutes per image just for the simulation -- added to which is the time it takes to generate the detailed images. Optimising the calculation times will therefore be one of the main focus areas in the ongoing research.

The Latest on "Honey Boo Boo" | Famecrawler

01 honey boo boo family1 300x212 Whats New With Honey Boo Boo?

We'll be seeing more of Honey Boo Boo's family soon.

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo aired its season finale last night on TLC ? which should leave you feeling either disappointed or relieved, depending on which side of the Love It/Loathe It fence you?re on.

For the last few weeks, our national attention has been drawn to the antics of Alana ?Honey Boo Boo? Thompson and her unique family. Jimmy Kimmel even made a joke about the show in the first few minutes of the Emmys broadcast. Meanwhile, Honey Boo Boo and her mother ?Mama June? Shannon have become the hottest reality personalities in town.

So if you think we won?t be hearing about the family for a while now that the show is on hiatus, think again! Here?s what we?ve found out about Alana and her clan in just the last couple of days?

They?ll be home for the holidays. And on our home TVs, too. According to Us Weekly, TLC has ordered more episodes of the hit series, which will feature Honey Boo Boo, Mama June, Sugar Bear, Pumpkin, Chubbs and Chickadee celebrating Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Sugar Bear is back home. After an ATV accident, Alana?s dad, Mike ?Sugar Bear? Thompson developed an infection in his leg that landed him in the hospital for nearly two weeks. It was thought that he might need surgery ? and possibly even require amputation. But the infection has cleared up with strong doses of antibiotics, and cameras caught him returning home yesterday.

Little Kaitlyn won?t be getting corrective surgery yet. On last night?s episode, June?s oldest daughter, Anna ?Chickadee? Shannon, gives birth to a baby girl. Viewers also learned that the baby has an unusual birth condition ? two thumbs on her right hand. But contrary to what you may think, the condition isn?t necessarily easy to correct. June recently explained that the extra appendage will be staying for a while. ?The doctor doesn?t want to do anything right now because they don?t know the full function of the other thumb or if they?re connected,? she says. Removing the thumb might cause Kaitlyn to lose function in the rest of her hand. ?They don?t want to make any rash decisions.?

The family is enjoying its fifteen minutes of fame. June bristles at the suggestion that she?s harming Alana and her sisters in any way by doing the show. ?I don?t exploit Alana,? she told RadarOnline. ?I would never exploit my kids. Critics are critics, and everyone has their opinions, but I am not doing anything wrong. It?s always been about fun, and it?s an experience in life they can look back at. We watch the show and wish they put in more stuff!?

They may be getting more money for the show. Holla?! According to an insider source, the family is negotiating a higher salary for a new season, and will probably end up receiving around $8,000 per episode. Still, that?s nowhere near the $30 million the Kardashian family reportedly is receiving for their next three seasons.

They?re not as unusual as you might think. Okay, not everyone tries owning a miniature pig or goes on the kiddie beauty-pageant circuit. But in one aspect, June and her daughters are very much like many of their fellow Georgia families: Nearly 40 percent of families in the state are at risk of health problems related to childhood obesity. A major Georgia pediatric hospital issued a statement: ?[B]ased on the children and families we see at Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta, the truth is that Honey Boo Boo and her family?s health habits may be more of the norm in Georgia than everyone would like to believe.?

Will you be redneckognizing this fun bunch next season?

ASUS Transformer Prime TF201 gets Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update

ASUS Transformer Prime TF201 gets Jelly Bean update, lets owners enjoy Android's finest

The folks from ASUS gave North American Transformer Pad Prime and Infinity owners a tease yesterday, telling them that the TF201 and TF700 models would receive an update to Android 4.1 within the next three days. Today, the Tawianese firm's made good on half its promise, delivering Jelly Bean to the Prime OTA. We confirmed that the update is rolling out, as our in-house TF201 has, indeed, been upgraded to version 4.1.1. Alas, Infinity owners are still sans their software goodies, but ASUS still has plenty of time left in that 72 hour window.

[Thanks, Anthony]

Op-Ed: Want to Improve School Districts? Listen to Teachers

I sat at the offices of Los Angeles Unified School District?s Board of Education waiting for the Board to allow public comments on a resolution that would block the district?s ability to measure my impact as a teacher.

The resolution calls for the elimination of using students? progress on state tests to measure my effectiveness. Granted, state tests aren?t perfect, but they do serve as a profound piece in evaluating a key responsibility I have as a teacher.

I scrambled to gather my thoughts. What could I say in three minutes that would instill a sense of urgency within the Board to put aside politics and come together to stand against this resolution? I was beginning to wonder if my words as a teacher would matter.

More: Teach Plus Executive Director: Why We Need to Rethink the Teaching Profession

It troubled me to see that teachers? feedback on this resolution was pooled with all the public comments, and that our specific expertise was given no weight or respect. The current reality for teachers within LAUSD is that we are part of a broken system of collaboration.

I am an educator who has accomplished much for my students, both for their social and academic development. But the district continually demonstrates its inability to formally incorporate my voice, along with the countless other dedicated teachers who greatly impact student achievement every day, in developing policies that would effectively elevate the teaching profession.

The system fails to enable its key stakeholders?teachers?to have a voice at the table.

Teachers? voices should not be treated as ?public comments? that the Board of Education occasionally invites to conversations where high stakes policies are implemented?policies that often lack the buy-in of many accomplished teachers. Currently, formal structures to allow teachers to impact policy at the district level are few and far between. The system fails to enable its key stakeholders, teachers, to have a voice at the table.

As teachers, we drive the everyday work the district and Board hope to achieve. We must be offered meaningful opportunities to share our perspectives with district and union officials through formal collaborative structures. In a truly collaborative environment, Board members would examine and vote on policy initiatives that are developed by teacher leaders alongside district and union leaders.?

My work as a Los Angeles Teaching Policy Fellow with Teach Plus this past year has enabled me to define what it means to be a teacher leader who seeks to shape policies while remaining within the classroom. The fellowship experience has offered me opportunities to work with district leaders on initiatives ranging from teacher preparation to performance, as well as pathways to impact education policies at the state and national levels.?

I traveled to New York to participate in the International Summit on the Teaching Profession; earlier this month I served on a panel about the future of the teaching profession at the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality in Washington, D.C. More importantly, the fellowship has enabled me to envision an effective system of collaboration between teachers and district officials that would allow us to develop and sustain a high-quality teaching force that places student achievement at the center.

But as my fellowship experience comes to an end, I am beginning to wonder if now I can only rely on three-minute ?public comments? at Board of Education meetings to voice my experience and ideas as an LAUSD teacher leader.

The district can do better with soliciting and listening to teachers? voices, as it has shown through its work with the Teaching Policy Fellows. But we shouldn?t need to rely on outside organizations to create these pathways: Districts must develop ongoing, established structures for teacher leaders to share the lessons we?ve learned from our practice and from working in successful school cultures.

If districts prioritize placing teachers at the center of the education conversation, they will be able to design policies around effective evaluation, professional development, and more to build, sustain, and celebrate a high-quality teaching force.

Use These Personal Finance Tips To Get Ahead - Reach Your Goals

Does your own financial situation confuse you? Believe me, you are not alone. Even the most intelligent people can feel at a loss concerning financial matters because they are unaware of some basic information. This article is packed with some of the easiest and most effective ideas for taking and maintaining control of your personal finances.

Scams that promise to make you rich quick, should be avoided at all costs. This is one thing that happens to many marketers. The majority of your money should be spent making more money, not on learning how to make more money.

If you are spending your whole paycheck before you even get it, you should look for some places where you can save. If you try to cut an enjoyable activity, such as dining out, out of your budget entirely, you?ll probably give up on your budget after just a few months. But if you cut your restaurant expenses by half, you can still enjoy going out sometimes.

TIP! Make sure you have a secure way to dispose of documents that contain personal information. Buying a shredder is the most straightforward way to accomplish this.

When making investments, consider the long-term success of your stocks and don?t invest out of a sense of loyalty. If the company you have done well with in the past is now not doing so well, then it is wise to invest your money into something that is performing better.

Everyone needs a savings that is liquid. A high yielding bank account will fulfill this need. Many online banks are offering higher interest savings accounts to lure in new customers; just like ?regular? banks, they are FDIC insured.

Try working from home if you want to save money. With today?s high gas prices, commuting to work can cost a lot of money. Gas, lunches and parking fees can eat up a sizable part of your paycheck.

On the day before payday, put away a little bit of money and resolve to only spend that money over the weekend. Once you get paid, just let the money be direct deposited and don?t take any of it out. This will allow the money for bills to still be available on Monday.

TIP! Try better your credit score before buying a car or home. Think about taking out a small loan, paying it off quickly, or keep a low balance and make timely payments on a couple of credit cards.

Try finding the best local restaurants that the locals eat to find more authentic food and better prices in foreign countries. Restaurants in busy tourist areas tend to be the highest priced, so find out where the locals eat. This way, you can find good food at affordable prices.

Revisit your insurance coverage. You may find that you are paying too much for insurance! There may be cheaper alternatives out on the market that you can use or there might be unnecessary options that you?re paying for. Take these items out of your policy, and use the money somewhere else.

An old computer can used to gain additional money when trying to get a little extra to help your finances. You can sell a broken one, but if it?s working it will be worth more. Even if someone sells a broken laptop, it will probably at least cover gas for a car or something in the same price range.

TIP! Create and stick to a budget to replenish your finances. Whether you create a budget with computer software or write it down using a pen and paper, a budget can help you focus on your spending habits so you can adjust as necessary.

Stop using your credit card if you find that you are having problems making the payments. Cut down on your expenses in any way that you can, and use an alternative payment method, so you don?t end up reaching or overextending the limit on your credit card. Before you charge anything to your credit card, you should pay your balance in full.

Look for a credit card with interesting rewards. If you pay your balance off every month, this is good for you! Reward cards reward cardholders for their purchases by giving out cash and airline tickets, and other items. Carefully study different reward cards, and find the card that offers the best rewards.

In the final analysis, it seems that many people have great concerns about their finances. The problems they experience result in extreme financial hardship. But, you do not have to allow this to happen to you, now that you have read this article. Gain control of your finances by utilizing the above advice

Try to stay away from getting into debt when you can so your personal finances can benefit. While certain debts are unavoidable, like mortgages or college loans, toxic debts such as credit cards are best avoided at all costs. Borrowing less money translates into paying less money on surcharges and interest.

Stratosphere targets deep sea to shape climate

Monday, September 24, 2012

A University of Utah study suggests something amazing: Periodic changes in winds 15 to 30 miles high in the stratosphere influence the seas by striking a vulnerable "Achilles heel" in the North Atlantic and changing mile-deep ocean circulation patterns, which in turn affect Earth's climate.

"We found evidence that what happens in the stratosphere matters for the ocean circulation and therefore for climate," says Thomas Reichler, senior author of the study published online Sunday, Sept. 23 in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Scientists already knew that events in the stratosphere, 6 miles to 30 miles above Earth, affect what happens below in the troposphere, the part of the atmosphere from Earth's surface up to 6 miles or about 32,800 feet. Weather occurs in the troposphere.

Researchers also knew that global circulation patterns in the oceans ? patterns caused mostly by variations in water temperature and saltiness ? affect global climate.

"It is not new that the stratosphere impacts the troposphere," says Reichler, an associate professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Utah. "It also is not new that the troposphere impacts the ocean. But now we actually demonstrated an entire link between the stratosphere, the troposphere and the ocean."

Funded by the University of Utah, Reichler conducted the study with University of Utah atmospheric sciences doctoral student Junsu Kim, and with atmospheric scientist Elisa Manzini and oceanographer J?rgen Kr?ger, both with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany.

Stratospheric Winds and Sea Circulation Show Similar Rhythms

Reichler and colleagues used weather observations and 4,000 years worth of supercomputer simulations of weather to show a surprising association between decade-scale, periodic changes in stratospheric wind patterns known as the polar vortex, and similar rhythmic changes in deep-sea circulation patterns. The changes are:

-- "Stratospheric sudden warming" events occur when temperatures rise and 80-mph "polar vortex" winds encircling the Artic suddenly weaken or even change direction. These winds extend from 15 miles elevation in the stratosphere up beyond the top of the stratosphere at 30 miles. The changes last for up to 60 days, allowing time for their effects to propagate down through the atmosphere to the ocean.

-- Changes in the speed of the Atlantic circulation pattern ? known as Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation ? that influences the world's oceans because it acts like a conveyor belt moving water around the planet.

Sometimes, both events happen several years in a row in one decade, and then none occur in the next decade. So incorporating this decade-scale effect of the stratosphere on the sea into supercomputer climate simulations or "models" is important in forecasting decade-to-decade climate changes that are distinct from global warming, Reichler says.

"If we as humans modify the stratosphere, it may ? through the chain of events we demonstrate in this study ? also impact the ocean circulation," he says. "Good examples of how we modify the stratosphere are the ozone hole and also fossil-fuel burning that adds carbon dioxide to the stratosphere. These changes to the stratosphere can alter the ocean, and any change to the ocean is extremely important to global climate."

A Vulnerable Soft Spot in the North Atlantic

"The North Atlantic is particularly important for global ocean circulation, and therefore for climate worldwide," Reichler says. "In a region south of Greenland, which is called the downwelling region, water can get cold and salty enough ? and thus dense enough ? so the water starts sinking."

It is Earth's most important region of seawater downwelling, he adds. That sinking of cold, salty water "drives the three-dimensional oceanic conveyor belt circulation. What happens in the Atlantic also affects the other oceans."

Reichler continues: "This area where downwelling occurs is quite susceptible to cooling or warming from the troposphere. If the water is close to becoming heavy enough to sink, then even small additional amounts of heating or cooling from the atmosphere may be imported to the ocean and either trigger downwelling events or delay them."

Because of that sensitivity, Reichler calls the sea south of Greenland "the Achilles heel of the North Atlantic."

From Stratosphere to the Sea

In winter, the stratospheric Arctic polar vortex whirls counterclockwise around the North Pole, with the strongest, 80-mph winds at about 60 degrees north latitude. They are stronger than jet stream winds, which are less than 70 mph in the troposphere below. But every two years on average, the stratospheric air suddenly is disrupted and the vortex gets warmer and weaker, and sometimes even shifts direction to clockwise.

"These are catastrophic rearrangements of circulation in the stratosphere," and the weaker or reversed polar vortex persists up to two months, Reichler says. "Breakdown of the polar vortex can affect circulation in the troposphere all the way down to the surface."

Reichler's study ventured into new territory by asking if changes in stratospheric polar vortex winds impart heat or cold to the sea, and how that affects the sea.

It already was known that that these stratospheric wind changes affect the North Atlantic Oscillation ? a pattern of low atmospheric pressure centered over Greenland and high pressure over the Azores to the south. The pattern can reverse or oscillate.

Because the oscillating pressure patterns are located above the ocean downwelling area near Greenland, the question is whether that pattern affects the downwelling and, in turn, the global oceanic circulation conveyor belt.

The study's computer simulations show a decadal on-off pattern of correlated changes in the polar vortex, atmospheric pressure oscillations over the North Atlantic and changes in sea circulation more than one mile beneath the waves. Observations are consistent with the pattern revealed in computer simulations.

Observations and Simulations of the Stratosphere-to-Sea Link

In the 1980s and 2000s, a series of stratospheric sudden warming events weakened polar vortex winds. During the 1990s, the polar vortex remained strong.

Reichler and colleagues used published worldwide ocean observations from a dozen research groups to reconstruct behavior of the conveyor belt ocean circulation during the same 30-year period.

"The weakening and strengthening of the stratospheric circulation seems to correspond with changes in ocean circulation in the North Atlantic," Reichler says.

To reduce uncertainties about the observations, the researchers used computers to simulate 4,000 years worth of atmosphere and ocean circulation.

"The computer model showed that when we have a series of these polar vortex changes, the ocean circulation is susceptible to those stratospheric events," Reichler says.

To further verify the findings, the researchers combined 18 atmosphere and ocean models into one big simulation, and "we see very similar outcomes."

The study suggests there is "a significant stratospheric impact on the ocean," the researchers write. "Recurring stratospheric vortex events create long-lived perturbations at the ocean surface, which penetrate into the deeper ocean and trigger multidecadal variability in its circulation. This leads to the remarkable fact that signals that emanate from the stratosphere cross the entire atmosphere-ocean system."
