Cremation Options Appeal To More People These Days

Cremation is a becoming a more common funerary choice for people. Rising costs of traditional funerals and personal choice among some are two of the reasons. Upon the death of a family member, the surviving members will have to make decisions about the disposal of the body. The number of cremation options sometimes depend on the manner of death.

Dying in a hospital or any death that is considered attended creates more options for the family. They can choose to have the body sent directly to the crematorium after the medical examiner allows it. Funeral homes usually make these kind of arrangements by working with the hospital and the family.

Many funeral homes keep a chapel to hold memorial services. When a memorial service is held following a cremation, it is normal to display photographs of the deceased. There is no body to put on display. Other than this, the service is held normally. Members of the clergy lead a prayer and speak about the dead person. Family members and friends also talk about the life of the deceased.

Using a crematorium is considerably cheaper than traditional burial services. However, the most expensive part of the traditional burial is the casket. In some case, people choose to buy a casket for the body. Often this is due to a memorial service being held before the cremation. The body is displayed in the casket before being burned. In such a case, the costs of either service will be similar.

The product of a cremation is not entirely ashes. Human bodies do not burn to ash very easily. There is a machine at the crematorium that smashes the remaining bones to powder. These ashes return to the funeral home in a simple container. The survivors sometimes choose to have these ashes placed in an urn. These urns are kept by the deceased person?s family or buried in a grave plot. These urns are sometimes displayed at memorial services for the deceased. A wide selection of these urns are available and some are very expensive themselves.

Governments regulate how to get rid of human remains. Often the deceased have instructed their families to hurl their ashes into the ocean or any place where they enjoyed life. This cannot always be done since it is not legal without a license in some cases. The carrying of the ashes is not controlled. The ashes are not a threat to the public health.

Crematoriums provide the means by which the bodies are placed into the fire. A family can save money by using the box they provide as part of your fee. Having a cremation and avoiding buying a grave plot or a casket saves thousands of dollars. Many feel this is easier mentally and emotionally on the family since there is no body to see. A memorial service where the family member is remembered and spoken kindly about is a more pleasant affair than the more conventional service.

The different cremation options include choice of casket, and the time of the cremation. Whether it takes place before or after the memorial service. Finally, the decision is made on the disposal or storage of the ashes. These are personal decisions affected by the beliefs of the family of the deceased. Often, cremation is the choice of the deceased themselves and their family carries it out for them.

Cooler Master Elegance Collection Cormo and Afrino cases for iPad review

To be perfectly honest, when I first saw the Cooler Master Elegance Collection cases for iPad, I wasn't sure I liked the look. They're made of 100% synthetic wool felt reminded me of the art I used to make as a child, or something like a faux-finish. However, the more I used them, the more they grew on me.

That material, the synthetic felt, is not only biodegradable, but also water repellant to keep your precious iPad safe from incidental contact with water. You can't submerge it, of course, but a little rain or a tiny splash won't bother it in the least. It also provides cushioning effect against drops and other minor forms of impact. But there's more.

With the Elegance Collection, Cooler Master has put a lot of thought into the details. The Cormo Sleeve messenger, for example, has a strong, snap closure but also a wonderfully old-world cord wrap as well. It's carefully constructed so as not to block or dampen the speakers, so if you're listening to music, a podcast, or an audiobook, you can still keep your iPad safe and secure in the Cormo Sleeve case. And it's even got a pocket for your iPhone, or for some papers, pens, sunglasses, or other small items.

The Afrino Folio offers a convenient carry handle and offers full headphone jack access. Once you've secured your iPad inside the rigid plastic frame, you can even roll up the soft, felt cover and use it to like a stand to prop up your iPhone. It only works in landscape mode, unfortunately, and not in portrait, but it does make the Afrino Folio more of a multitasker. There's even a place to store your pen or stylus, though it doesn't feel especially secure to me...

The good

  • Water repellent material
  • Easy access to ports
  • Excellent attention to details

The bad

  • Felt look can take some getting used to
  • Bulky by nature of materials and style

The bottom line

The Cooler Master Elegance Collection cases for iPad, namely the Cormo Sleeve and the Afrino Folio absolutely aren't for everyone. While water and impact resistant, the synthetic wool felt finish alone will probably make many think long and hard before bringing either one of them home. If you do like the folio or messenger look, and enjoy the hipster vibe, the Cooler Master Elegance Collection for iPad is definitely something to consider.

Dwarfs emit gravitational waves

Researchers have spotted visible-light evidence for one of astronomy's most elusive targets - gravitational waves - in the orbit of a pair of dead stars.

Until now, these ripples in space-time, first predicted by Einstein, have only been inferred from radio-wave sources.

But a change in the orbits of two white dwarf stars orbiting one another 3,000 light-years away is further proof of the waves that can literally be seen.

A study to be reported in Astrophysical Journal Letters describes the pair.

Gravitational waves were a significant part of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which viewed space itself as a malleable construct, and the gravity of massive objects as a force that could effectively warp it.

Catching sight of an actual gravitational wave, however, is a tricky business; their effects tend to be tiny and the have so far eluded discovery in Earth-bound experiments.

But the wider Universe provides a laboratory in which the indirect effects of gravitational waves can be measured.

Six-second switch

In principle, any two massive objects orbiting one another can emit gravitational waves, slowly losing the momentum of their orbits into the waves.

The effect is to slightly change the size of the orbits, and the time it takes to complete them.

A measurement of a minuscule change in the orbits of rapidly rotating neutron stars called pulsars garnered the 1993 Nobel Prize in physics.

But pulling off the same trick with visible light has seemed unlikely until now.

It is the extreme nature of the pair of white dwarf stars known as J0651 - each a substantial fraction of our Sun's mass orbiting each other at a distance just a third that between the Earth and Moon - that increases the magnitude of the gravitational waves.

As members of the same team reported in Astrophysical Journal in 2011, the pair orbit each other in less than 13 minutes.

Since that discovery, the team has been keenly watching the pair "eclipse" one another, with each briefly blocking out the other's light as seen from Earth.

Over a period of 13 months, the team saw the orbital period reduce by less than a thousandth of a second, but the effect also shifts when the eclipse time is expected to happen, and that has shifted back by some six seconds since the pair were discovered.

"A lot of these indirect measurements have taken people years, mostly because the orbits are so much longer," explained lead author of the study, JJ Hermes from the University of Texas at Austin.

Mr Hermes told BBC News that he liked the idea that such a groundbreaking result was established in part by using a telescope nearly as old as Einstein's theory: the Otto Struve 2.1m telescope at the McDonald Observatory in Texas.

"There have been 30 years of using radio telescopes and timing pulsars, but this is the first time we've been able to detect the influence of gravitational wave radiation using an optical telescope," he told BBC News.

The team will continue to watch the pair's tightening orbit, and the expected eclipse time should shift back by another 20 seconds by next May. The results will also help guide observations from "direct detection" experiments.

These, such as the proposed eLisa project, aim to measure the tiny relative movements of vastly separated detectors as gravitational waves pass - a final, irrefutable proof that the waves are what relativity predicted so long ago.

"It would be a really nice confirmation if we got one of these laser interferometer missions going - we'd know exactly what to look for," Mr Hermes said.

"We've crunched the numbers, and eLisa would be able to detect this thing in about a week."

'Prometheus' Behind-The-Scene Stills Show Different Take On Fifield Monster

One of the most endearing aspects of "Prometheus" was how lo-fi some of the creature effects were. The Engineers, the zombie-fied Fifield and that little surprise at the end had the look of some classic "Alien" creatures that made us a twinge nostalgic. But new stills featured in Cinefex magazine (via Blood Disgusting) show an [...]

Tips On How to Stage Your Home For Sale | The Bellingham Real ...

Research shows that staged homes sell quicker. You don?t need to hire a professional stager, though; just get a second opinion of your work from a friend or your real estate agent with a good eye for how things look. Here are 10 self-staging tips:

1. Freshen the Paint.?Put a fresh coat of paint on walls and trim. Use neutral colors and think about painting the exterior too if you think it needs it.?

2. Fill Empty Wall Space.?Bare walls make your home feel cold. Put up framed artwork, mirrors or photography. Be creative ? hang plates, driftwood or interesting found objects!

3. Treat the TV like Art. A flat-screen TV on the wall can be a piece of art. Connect it to a DVD player or computer and play a silent slide show of scenes from nature. Remove TVs from bedrooms.

4. Furnish All Rooms. Buyers have trouble seeing themselves living in a space that?s empty. Don?t use a lot of furniture and avoid bold patterns. Add pillows and throws for pops of color.

5. Install Window Treatments.?Blank windows feel sterile. Put up a simple curtain rod and solid color drapes for a cozy feeling and a nicely framed view outside.

6. Tidy Up the Bookshelves. Get rid of clutter on shelves and remove book jackets to create a decorative focal point.

7. Add Flowers. Fresh-cut flowers and plants add life. Avoid using pastic flowers and trees? they look dated.

8. Make Bedrooms Gender-neutral. Keep colors neutral, with simple white bedding for a fresh look.

9. De-clutter everywhere. Remove personal items from rooms ? family photos, collectibles, mail, magazines, and toys. Tidy up closets. In the kitchen, take small appliances off counter tops; organize food and dishes in cupboards.

10. Keep Up the Yard.?Make sure your yard looks neat and well taken care of. Cut the grass before the buyer visits.

Thanks you Sidney Stonecypher at People?s Bank for passing these great home staging tips along to us. If you would like to have our opinion on staging your home feel free to give us a call at 1-888-713-3056 or email us at Info@JohnsonTeamRealEstate.com we would be happy to help!

Saying goodbye to the crib? I'm terrified. | BabyCenter Blog

Before I begin, I should make one thing clear: I?m basically obsessed with my children?s sleep habits. I?m a slave to naptime, I cling to the routine, I Google ?Help! Baby won?t sleep!? until my fingers ache. It?s not healthy, but there it is: My ugly truth.

This obsession hit me smack in the face just the other day when I asked my 6-year-old, who was playing with her baby dolls, if she wanted a snack.

?I do,? she said. ?But it?s getting close to baby?s bedtime, so I should wait until I take care of that.? Then she very carefully/neurotically draped a towel over the doll?s bassinet and whispered as we both tiptoed out of her bedroom, ?I want to make sure no light gets in.?

Yup. That right there is all me, baby.

This week I also came face to face with the day I?ve been absolutely dreading: We packed up our 2-year-old?s crib and in its place put a completely adorable, totally terrifying toddler bed.

I should point out that this is a girl who despite my best, most desperate efforts, didn?t sleep through the night until she was 22 months old. We then had almost 3 blissful months of happy bedtimes and sound slumbers? until the screaming started. Out of the blue she started frantically screeching at the mere mention of going to bed. Hoping it was just a phase, I tried everything to ease her angst: Earlier bedtime, later bedtime, lullabies, night lights, books, teddy bears, music boxes, sitting by the crib, making a quick exit. Nothing helped. Night after night, week after week, my heart broke a little every time I put her in that crib with tears trailing shiny ribbons down her pink cheeks. Sobbing, gasping, pleading.

So after talking to a few of my mom friends I decided it was time to bite the dreaded bullet and make the move to a toddler bed. With my oldest I never really understood the point of the toddler bed ? we moved her right from a crib to a twin bed. No rails, that was it. Why transition twice, right? For the 1,000th time my second child has made me eat my words, though. She may be done with her little wooden crib, but my mother?s intuition is screaming at the top of its lungs that she?s not ready for an actual bed just yet. So a toddler bed it is.

I still went into it with the lowest of expectations; I imagined my wild, spirited baby girl set free from the constraints of her cozy crib, kicking and screaming and climbing the bookshelves. But here we are on day #3 and after a tiny bit of very vocal protest she?s tucked under her Elmo blanket with her most beloved stuffed dogs and ducks, mercifully and peacefully asleep.

She?s proved me wrong once again.

When did your baby move out of the crib? How did it go?

Be sure to check out Dr. Lisa Dana?s advice on transitioning out of the crib

Do You Make These Mistakes In Marketing Your Small Business?

Posted on 27. Aug, 2012 by Anum Hussain in Blog, Small Business Internet Marketing, Small Business Marketing

future of marketingintroductory3

The future of our beloved marketing industry is changing fast ? the good news is, we don?t even need a crystal ball to see where it?s headed!

HubSpot CMO Mike Volpe, when sharing his story on how he came to be HubSpot?s fifth employee, says the problem he faced as a marketer was finding an integrated marketing software solution that allowed him to see how his various marketing efforts impacted his website and revenue. Little did he know when yearning for this marketing system that it was in the process of being built

That was just five years ago, and now our industry is at a place where Mike Volpe?s dream has been realized. Now, it?s time to tap into the other dreams marketers are having ? so we can solve them! Like true HubSpotters, we turn to the data to let us know what marketers are yearning for. And the statistics in this blog post are screaming it in our faces, telling us exactly where the future of our industry lies. Here are 33 statistics that give you a glimpse into where the future of marketing is headed!

Social Media and Social Lead Nurturing

1) Failure to respond via social channels can lead to up to a 15% increase in churn rate for existing customers. (Source: Gartner) Tweet This Stat!

2) 37% of brands would like to use social media engagement to create customer-tailored marketing campaigns. (Source: Forrester) Tweet This Stat!

3) 75% of B2B companies do not measure or quantify social media engagement. (Source: Satmetrix) Tweet This Stat!

9) Regardless, marketers still continue to struggle with integrating social media into the company?s overall strategy. On a scale of 1-7, only 6.8% of respondents believe that social media is ?very integrated? into their strategy (the highest rank for the question), while 16.7% believe that it?s not integrated at all (the lowest rank for the question). (Source: CMO Survey) Tweet This Stat!

What These Social Media Stats Say About the Future of Marketing

social lead nurturingThere are a few key takeaways from these social media stats. First, marketers are increasingly using social media. It?s no longer a matter of ?you have to be on social.? It?s a matter of ?we?re active on social.? The problem with this, however, leads to the second takeaway. Marketers are still in need of a system that will clearly provide social media analytics, indicate where social media users are travelling to and from, and show how their social media efforts are directly impacting their business. Finally, marketers (and CMOs!) want to do all of this with an integrated system. Marketers can?t be running from a blogging CMS, to a social publishing tool, to an analytics tool all day. They need these to all be connected in one system that does it all.

Personalization, Relevancy and Dynamic Content

10) Personalized emails improve click-through rates by 14%, and conversion rates by 10%.
(Source: Aberdeen) Tweet This Stat!

11) The top reasons for U.S. email users to unsubscribe from a business or non-profit email subscription are too many emails (69%) and content that is no longer relevant (56%). (Source: Chadwick Martin Bailey) Tweet This Stat!

15) 53% of retailers plan to focus on web personalization engines in 2012. (Source: National Retail Federation)?Tweet This Stat!

16) 75% of people prefer to receive offers over any other form of call-to-action. (Source: Text Marketer) Tweet This Stat!

17) In a study of 650 multi-channel marketing campaigns, personalized campaigns consistently and overwhelmingly beat out static campaigns in generating a high response rate from recipients.?See a breakdown by industry here. (Source: MindFire). Tweet This Stat!??

What These Personalization, Relevancy, & Dynamic Content Stats Say About the Future of Marketing

personalizationPeople want targeted and relevant content. Marketers need to provide it. While marketers already know they should be segmenting their contacts and sharing only what the content that?s most valuable to their audience, it?s not always happening. The problem is, who has the budget or resources to have multiple marketing managers focus on segmenting out all their email contacts among people at different stages of involvement with the brand? To solve it, marketers need a system that can personalize communication and trigger the right messages to be sent to the right person at the right time.

Email Marketing and Automation

18) 59% of B2B marketers say email is the most effective channel for generating revenue. (Source: BtoB Magazine) Tweet This Stat!

19) 49% of B2B marketers spend more time and resources on email than on other channels. (Source: BtoB Magazine) Tweet This Stat!

20) Triggered email messages get 119% higher click-through rates than ?business as usual? messages. (Source: Epsilon) Tweet This Stat!

21) More than 50% of respondents said they had not yet realized the value of their investment in marketing automation. (Source: Genius) Tweet This Stat!

22) 61% of marketing companies plan to increase their email marketing efforts in the next year. (Source: Experian) Tweet This Stat!

23) The adoption of marketing automation technology is expected to increase by 50% by 2015. (Source: Sirius Decisions) Tweet This Stat!

What These Email Marketing & Automation Stats Say About the Future of Marketing

emailWe already understand from the personalization stats that customization is a must. But gone are the days of just that. Marketers need a tool that will trigger their emails by a series of rules set by the marketer to create dynamically evolving segments and automate marketing actions. More than email automation, marketers need to be able to enable campaigns to set off when needed. By doing so, marketers will understand the value of marketing automation ? it?s not about blasting out messages. It?s about finding a way to improve the targeting of your messages to improve the user experience while benefiting your business.

Marketing Analytics and Integration

24) CMOs report they spend 8% of their marketing budgets on marketing analytics, and expect to increase this level in the next three years. (Source: CMO Survey) Tweet This Stat!

25) Spending on marketing analytics is expected to increase 60% by 2015. (Source: CMO Survey) Tweet This Stat!

26) By 2013, lead management campaigns integrating 4 or more digital channels will outperform single- or dual-channel campaigns by 300%. (Source: Gartner) Tweet This Stat!

27) By 2014, over 40% of large complex marketing organizations will have developed a pace-layered application approach to integrated marketing. (Source: Gartner) Tweet This Stat!

What These Marketing Analytics & Intregration Stats Say About the Future of Marketing

marketing analyticsAs foreshadowed by Mike Volpe?s story in our introduction, integration is a crucial element of a marketing team?s success. Marketers need the kind of information you?re reading right now: data. Data that provides insights and vision for where your marketing strategies should be headed. And while you can read general statistics through various studies, nothing will benefit your business like looking at specific data reflective of your own efforts. Having an analytics system that integrates every part of your marketing will ensure that you?re making the right decisions and allocating budget wisely based off the successes and failures of your marketing efforts.

Mobile Marketing and Apps

28) Worldwide mobile advertising revenue will expand 3.5X its present size by 2016. (Source: Yankee Group) Tweet This Stat!

29) Mobile commerce will account for 24.4% of overall ecommerce revenues by the end of 2017. (Source: ABI Research) Tweet This Stat!

30) Email opens on smartphones and tablets have increased 80% over the last six months. (Source: Litmus) Tweet This Stat!

31) 45% of US businesses are conducting some form of mobile marketing, with mobile websites (70%), mobile applications (55%), and QR codes (49%) being the most common tactics. (Source: StrongMail) Tweet This Stat!

32) 47% of marketing companies plan to increase their efforts in mobile apps in the next year. (Source: Experian) Tweet This Stat!

33) 59% of U.S. marketing companies collect mobile contact information. (Source: Experian) Tweet This Stat!

What These Mobile Marketing & Apps Stats Say About the Future of Marketing

mobile optimizationEveryone has a smartphone! Yes, we know. We also know that more people are seeing ads on their phones, and that websites need to be mobile optimized. But that?s just the consumer experience. What about the business experience? What about the marketers who need to understand how people are interacting with them on mobile? Or what about marketers who are running around planning and implementing strategies, and need a mobile app tied to their analytics and automation software to see exactly how their strategies are playing out? Marketers need an application that enables them to keep tabs on their lead generation and customer conversions on the go.

All in all, marketing is undergoing a powerful transformation. There are needs to be met, ideas to be created, and revolutions coming out way. Once upon a time, we discussed how social media was a shiny new toy, email marketing was reincarnating into something valuable, and mobile apps were fun to click on. Now it?s time to connect all these different parts. It?s time to see how each supports one another to execute the perfect marketing campaign ? and watch how it does so by reveiwing the metrics in an integrated analytics platform. Easy. Powerful. Integrated. That?s what marketing needs.

Where do you see the future of marketing going? Where do you want it to go?

Engadget Giveaway: win a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro dev tablet!

Engadget Giveaway win a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Development Tablet!

The Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro Mobile Development Platform (MDP) tablet is not your typical Android-based slate -- it's a developer's best friend. This particular MDP houses a quad-core Snapdragon S4 APQ8064 chip, Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB LPDDR2 RAM, and its primary purpose for even existing is to help devs test their games and apps on a true-blue device before OEM products begin hitting the market later this year. It's the most impressive quad-core tablet (in terms of performance) we've ever played with, but at $1,299 a pop, it isn't cheap. But that's where you, dear reader, come in: the slate you see above is going to be handed out to a lucky winner, and all you have to do is leave a comment in the usual place. Don't forget to read the rules below, and best of luck!

U.S. court to test South Carolina voter ID law

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - South Carolina this week will try to convince a United States federal court its new voter identification law doesn't discriminate against black voters, contrary to a finding by the federal government.

The trial set to begin on Monday in Washington marks the Obama administration's latest attempt to block a wave of laws in Republican-controlled states that require voters to show certain forms of photo ID at the polls.

As in other states to pass such laws, Republicans in South Carolina's legislature said the measure discourages voter fraud. Republican Governor Nikki Haley signed the requirement into law in May of last year.

But in December, the U.S. Department of Justice blocked the law from taking effect, using a power from the 1965 Voting Rights Act that allows the government to veto voting rule changes in states with a history of racial repression.

With a looming U.S. Supreme Court review of the federal government's right to block election changes in some state and local governments, the Obama administration has been selective with which voter ID laws it contests.

The Justice Department did not fight more lax voter ID requirements in states such as Georgia and Virginia, but blocked stricter versions in Texas and South Carolina. Arguments over the Texas law were held in July, and a decision is expected in the near future.

PHOTO IDENTITY CARDS

South Carolina's law requires voters to present one of five forms of photo ID. Voters without those specific forms of ID are 20 percent more likely to be black, according to a Justice Department study.

In a letter, the Justice Department informed South Carolina it was blocking the voter ID law. It said the requirement could impede the voting rights of tens of thousands of people, noting that just over a third of the state's registered minority voters did not have a driver's license. The letter also said there was no evidence of voter fraud in South Carolina. The Justice Department declined further comment.

In February, South Carolina sued the U.S. government to allow its voter ID law to take effect.

For the lawsuit, South Carolina hired all-star lawyer Paul Clement, who argued against the Obama administration's healthcare law before the Supreme Court last term.

"Nothing in this law prevents anyone from voting if they cannot immediately show a valid photo identification," South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said in a statement.

He argued that it was indistinguishable from an Indiana voter ID law that passed Supreme Court muster in 2008.

Under the South Carolina law, anyone who wants to vote but does not have a photo ID must obtain a new voter registration card that includes a photo. A birth certificate can be used to prove identity.

But the Obama administration says the law is unclear about how the new cards would be distributed, raising concerns that it might be too tough to get a new card in time for the November 6 election.

RULING BEFORE ELECTION

It's unclear when a decision might be reached after the trial, expected to go five days, although one is likely before the election.

Estimates on how many voters are affected by photo ID laws vary widely based on how the studies were conducted.

A study made public in July said new laws in 10 states requiring voters to show photo identification would make it more difficult for millions of Americans to cast ballots and likely would drive down turnout among minorities, the poor and the elderly.

The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University Law School, a liberal group that has supported the Obama administration challenges, said one in 10 Americans lacked the necessary government-issued photo IDs that now are required in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

But Republicans say the number of people without photo ID is much smaller and the laws provide for voters without IDs to get them, in some cases free of charge.

The case is State of South Carolina v. United States of America and Eric Holder, Jr. Presiding are U.S. District Judges Brett M. Kavanaugh, John D. Bates and Colleen Kollar-Kotelly. Case No. 1:12-cv-203.

For the United States: Catherine Meza

Inside the Business of Online Reviews For Hire | IT Security

Rick Zeman writes ?Consumer reviews are powerful because, unlike old-style advertising and marketing, they offer the illusion of truth. They purport to be testimonials of real people, even though some are bought and sold just like everything else on the commercial Internet. Yet it is all but impossible to tell when reviews were written by the marketers or retailers (or by the authors themselves under pseudonyms), by customers (who might get a deal from a merchant for giving a good score) or by a hired third-party service. The New York Times tells of the rise and fall of the founder of one such hired third party service who had has been so successful planting paid fake reviews that he no longer trusts any online review. He should know. Because of him and his kind, it?s estimated that one third of online reviews are fake.?

Isaac passes Haiti, heads toward Cuba, Florida

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac swept across Haiti's southern peninsula early Saturday, dousing a capital city prone to flooding and adding to the misery of a poor nation still trying to recover from the terrible 2010 earthquake.

The storm was heading toward eastern Cuba and forecasters said it poses a threat to Florida Monday and Tuesday, just as the Republican Party gathers for its national convention in Tampa. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said a hurricane warning is in effect for the Florida Keys and for the west coast of Florida from Bonita Beach south to Florida Bay.

At least three people were reported dead. A woman and a child died in the town of Souvenance, Sen. Francisco Delacruz told a local radio station. A 10-year-old girl died in Thomazeau when a wall fell on his, said Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, director of Haiti's Civil Protection Office.

She said as many as 5,000 people were evacuated because of flooding.

Many, however, stayed and suffered. The sprawling seaside shantytown of Cite Soleil was among the areas that flooded.

"From last night, we're in misery," said Cite Soleil resident Jean-Gymar Joseph. "All our children are sleeping in the mud, in the rain."

More than 50 tents in a quake settlement collapsed, forcing people to scramble through the mud to try to save their belongings.

Forecasters said Isaac could dump as much as eight to 12 inches (30 centimeters) and even up to 20 inches (51 centimeters) on Hispaniola, which is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, as well as produce a storm surge of up to 3 feet (0.9 meters).

Isaac was centered about 95 miles (150 kilometers) east-southeast of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, early Saturday, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (95 kph). It was moving northwest at 14 mph (22 kph). Tropical force winds extended nearly 200 miles (321 kilometers) from the storm's center.

Forecasters said the storm was likely to march up the Gulf of Mexico, offshore of Florida's west coast, as a hurricane on Monday, just as the Republican National Convention is scheduled to start. Tampa was within the storm's possible strike zone, but the most likely course would carry it toward landfall on the Florida Panhandle late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Cuba declared a state of alert Friday for six eastern provinces and five central provinces were put on preliminary watch. Vacationers in tourist installations of those regions were evacuated.

State television began an all-day transmission of news about the storm on Saturday.

Radio Baracoa, from the city of Baracoa on the northern coast of eastern Cuba, reported that high seas began topping the city's seawall Friday night. Reports said lower than normal rains had left reservoirs well below capacity and in good shape to absorb runoff.

Cuba has a highly organized civil defense system that goes door-to-door to enforce evacuations of at-risk areas, largely averting casualties from storms even when they cause major flooding and significant damage to crops.

In Port-au-Prince, a city of some 3 million ringed by mountains, authorities and aid workers tried to evacuate people from a tent camp to temporary shelters.

More than a hundred people were at a shelter in a school that President Michel Martelly toured Friday, but after the visit some people began to leave.

"They dragged me from the camp and brought me here," 38-year-old Marlene Charles, thirsty and hungry, said about the aid groups. "There's no way I'm going to spend the night here."

In the Dominican Republic, authorities evacuated people from low-lying areas but, as in Haiti, they encountered resistance. Still, authorities said they evacuated nearly 2,900 people. The majority were transferred to the homes of relatives while about 300 were sent to government shelters.

Flooding was reported in Santo Domingo and Santiago but no reports of injuries.

Organizers of next week's Republican National Convention in Tampa were monitoring storm developments, and authorities said there were no plans to cancel the convention.

Out in the eastern Atlantic, former Tropical Storm Joyce degenerated into a weak low pressure system Friday.

Should I Buy Gold? Ask Robert Bhat - Credit Card and Finance Tips

As a finance professional, Robert Bhat frequently gets asked the question, Should I buy gold?? Because Robert Bhat primarily deals with commercial real estate and investments for big industries, he?s quick to tell inquisitors that he?s not the most qualified person to speak on personal investments.? However, because Robert Bhat is so frequently confronted with the question, he wants to take a moment to address the great precious metal issue.

Who Are You?

Robert Bhat will always respond to this question with one of his own: Who are you?? The question digs at something more than simple identity!? For Robert Bhat, no one should ever buy anything as a blanket rule.? Whether or not you buy gold (or any other precious metal) should be determined not by gold, but by your own financial situation and portfolio.

If you?re looking to diversify your portfolio, and you have liquid cash with which you can do so, then Robert Bhat believes that smart precious metal investments can turn out to be quite profitable in the long run.? However, if you only have $800 to ?play with,? Robert Bhat doesn?t consider gold and other precious metals to be essential investments for those who have a more limited net worth.

How Long Will You Hold?

Gold and other precious metals, advises Robert Bhat, are not for short term investors.? While the price of gold may have risen quickly in recent years, that doesn?t guarantee it will continue to do so in the next few months.? Robert Bhat always counters gold-proponents who cite its recent soar in price by reminding them that past performance never guarantees future performance.

Of course, more authoritative articles can help you continue to work through this decision.? But, Robert Bhat is happy to offer what advice he does have on precious metals as investments.

Armstrong takes part in bike race amid controversy

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) ? For a few hours, Lance Armstrong was back in his element ? on a bike and in a race.

No controversies, little fanfare.

The escape Saturday into the mountains around Aspen, Colo., comes a day after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency disciplined Armstrong with a lifetime ban from professional cycling and vacated his seven Tour de France titles after deciding he used performance-enhancing drugs.

There were only a handful of fans at the start of the Power of Four mountain bike competition, a 36-mile trek that includes plenty of climbing.

Asked if he was ready, Armstrong smiled and said, "I hope so. ... This is going to be hard for all of us."

Decked out in black and gold and sporting a Livestrong emblem on his jersey, Armstrong tinkered with his bike and gave a kiss to girlfriend Anna Hansen before pedaling off.

His busy weekend includes a marathon Sunday. He may be banned from cycling, but it hasn't diminished his passion for competition.

These weekend races may have to suffice.

Armstrong, who retired a year ago and turns 41 next month, said Thursday he would no longer challenge USADA and declined to exercise his last option by entering arbitration. He denied again that he took banned substances in his career, calling USADA's investigation a "witch hunt" without any physical evidence.

USADA said its evidence came from more than a dozen witnesses "who agreed to testify and provide evidence about their firsthand experience and/or knowledge of the doping activity of those involved in the USPS conspiracy," a reference to Armstrong's former U.S. Postal Service cycling team.

The unidentified witnesses said they knew or had been told by Armstrong himself that he had "used EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone and cortisone" from before 1998 through 2005, and that he had previously used EPO, testosterone and Human Growth Hormone through 1996, USADA said. Armstrong also allegedly handed out doping products and encouraged banned methods ? and used "blood manipulation including EPO or blood transfusions" during his 2009 comeback race on the Tour de France.

USADA chief executive Travis Tygart described the investigation as a battle against a "win-at-all-cost culture," adding that the International Cycling Union was "bound to recognize our decision and impose it."

Fans defended Armstrong on Twitter, insisting his work with Livestrong trumps what he accomplished on a bike. His success helped sell millions of "Livestrong" yellow plastic bracelets as he promoted cancer awareness and research. He's raised nearly $500 million since the Lance Armstrong Foundation started in 1997.

On Friday alone, the foundation said it received 400 donations that totaled around $75,000.

Fulham complain over Liverpool's Dempsey interest

Fulham launched an official complaint to the Premier League on Thursday over Liverpool's conduct in their pursuit of American forward Clint Dempsey.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers last month broke managerial protocol when he went public with his interest in Dempsey, prompting the Cottagers star to make it clear he wanted to move to Anfield.

But there has been no firm bid from Liverpool since then, leaving the player confused and Fulham boss Martin Jol furious.

Jol has left Dempsey out of his squad for Saturday's trip to Manchester United, having already dropped him for last weekend's victory over Norwich because he felt the player wasn't in the right frame of mind to perform.

The Dutchman criticised Liverpool's behaviour last week and the west London club have now followed up with a complaint to the Premier League.

"The Premier League has received a complaint from Fulham regarding certain comments made by Liverpool officials and is currently looking into the matter," a statement read.

Jol is frustrated that he has been left with an unsettled player, but has offered an olive branch to Dempsey, who was his side's top-scorer last season.

"Mentally Clint wants to move, he doesn't want to stay here. His head was turned and that was the problem," Jol said on Thursday.

"It's a problem and a situation you don't want. It's not something you can talk to a player about every day because he doesn't want to.

"I don't know if he'll remain a Fulham player. I'd love to keep him, but I'm not sure.

"Hopefully if he stays, then in the next couple of weeks he will change his thoughts about us.

"With me there's no problem and I don't think there's a problem within the team over him."

Jol denied Dempsey had refused to play for Fulham again, instead declaring it was his decision to drop the 29-year-old, who has entered the final year of his contract.

"I never said he's gone on strike," he said. "It started during our pre-season tour to Germany. I was probably a bit naive, asking 'Clint, do you want to start?'. All he said was 'you know what I want'.

"This hasn't caused any disruption to the squad because of the decision I made in Germany not to play him.

"After that it was very difficult to communicate. He was not committed to the team.

"For us it would have been better had Liverpool followed it up with a formal bid, but they haven't."

Green Bay Packers Grant Nebraska Teen's Wish | Kids Wish Network

McCool Junction, NE ? You know the names: Brett Favre or Aaron Rogers and they?re known for being the only NFL?team owned by their fans. Now there?s another name on the Packers roster,? a Nebraska teen whose wish came true at Lambeau Field.

You could say Caleb Friesner is part of the team.? Holding his custom made Green?Bay Packers Jersey, Friesner pointed at the stitching and said, ?Their seamstress actually seamed this on, sewed this on.?

Caleb?s jersey had been hanging in his own locker and there was a game ball with his name Thanks to the ?Kids Wish Network? the 16-year old?s dream to meet the Green Bay Packers came true.? Caleb was granted full VIP?access during his visit. He said,? ?At the end of practice I got to break the huddle so I got to say 1-2-3 go Pack.?

Caleb met his idols including NFL?s MVP Aaron Rogers and Linebacker Clay Matthews.? Matthews sat next to Caleb for quite a while to talk about ?guy stuff?.? ?He was actually pretty cool. I actually thought he would be all stubborn and what not, but he?s just like one of my friends,? said the star-struck teen.

The McCool Junction teen is an avid fan of football, he even played for several years before being sidelined and diagnosed with a rare and sometimes debilitating disease known as ?Evans Disease?.? Caleb had just started two-a days for football and kept coming home with deep bruises. His mother,? Mindy Friesner immediately began to worry when they wouldn?t go away.? ?They started getting deeper and they started getting more and more and he had gotten stepped on one day at practice and he actually had a size 12 cleat mark on his leg,? Friesner recalled.

Doctors at The Nebraska Medical Center diagnosed him with Evans Syndrome. The disease prevents his blood from clotting ? meaning even a simple injury from being tackled on the field could be deadly.?? His father Mike explained just how dangerous a small injury could be.? ?He could actually hurt something inside and he could actually he could have bled out internally and no body would have known,? Mike explained.

Kids Wish Network grants ?wishes? to children who suffer life-threatening illnesses.? The non-profit organization sent the whole Friesner family to Green Bay.? Mike said the whole experience was? magical for his son, ?I?m not a Green Bay Packers fan but now I am because what they did for my son and that was something special that no body else could give him.?

While Caleb battles what doctors say is an ?incurable disease?, He?s positive about his future and his?Green?Bay Packers.? His prediction,? ?Well usually they don?t do so hot in the pre-season because they don?t have Rogers playing the whole game, but I think they?re doing to do real good. I think they?re going to go to the super bowl and win it.?
