Leopards prowling California Street

In homage to Kathi Kamen Goldmark, who died in May, Sherith Israel on California Street was festooned on Monday with all things leopard - pin-on ribbons, programs, tablecloths, napkins and plates - and crowded with folks who had heeded the gathering announcement's note ("sequins, leopard print and vamp attire permitted"). Many boldfaced names were there, as a few folks reminded me the next day, when I pondered what to say about a memorial that was, like its honoree, genuine and glitzy at once.

Goldmark had worked as an author escort, editor and music producer, then as a longtime producer of "West Coast Live." All of this brought her into contact with boldfaced names, and among her many feats, she organized the Rock Bottom Remainders, a rock band of famous authors. Musicians and writers were at her memorial, along with family members, co-workers and acquaintances, and it looked like - such a huge gang - just about everyone she'd ever met. As it was said there, that was what Goldmark was like: If you encountered her, you were an acquaintance; if you were an acquaintance, you became a friend; if you were a friend, you became a lifelong soul sister/brother.

Kathi, who wanted to call a book she and her husband, Sam Barry, were working on about her breast cancer and his colon cancer "Tits and Ass," Kathi, who persuaded Amy Tan to don dominatrix gear and sing "These Boots Are Made for Walking," Kathi, who dispensed good food, good humor and kazoos with equal generosity, wasn't a halfway sort of person.

But if it seemed she loved everyone, the love she felt for her son, Tony Goldmark, was visibly 10 times as intense. She glowed when she spoke of him, lauded his accomplishments as a songwriter and creative person, encouraged and nurtured his every endeavor.

So when he began his remarks with the warning that he was likely to be emotional, but "I must speak from the heart," it was when I could most picture her at this solemn hullabaloo of a ritual. "What kind of house of worship," he said, his voice rising with the question, "offers no free parking?"

Somewhere, Kathi - performer, star, catalyst and a great audience, too - was laughing.

Poet Diane di Prima, former San Francisco poet laureate, has been suffering from an array of health problems - teeth, eyes, back, knees, more - as well as financial problems. So poet Michael McClure reached out to members of the poetry community, asking for help.

One of the folks who got his note was actress and poet Amber Tamblyn, who, while blogging that di Prima's memoir had "changed me on a fundamental level," set up a donations page at GiveForward. Di Prima, 78, "was one of the only women of the Beat Generation," wrote Tamblyn, "and was instrumental in shaping the way we view gender based politics."

When she informed di Prima about her campaign, wrote Tamblyn, di Prima said, "That's all great and we need the money. ... but more importantly, how are your poems coming along these days?"

P.S.: Diane Roby, curator of "Cross Pollination: The Art of Lawrence Ferlinghetti," on all summer at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, says that Tommy Smothers came to Friday night's opening reception. It was his first-ever meeting with Ferlinghetti, and the two reminisced about the old days of the Washington Square Bar & Grill.

Roby, an old friend of Ferlinghetti's, took his kitchen clock from off the wall for the show. He'd painted on its face "Brother, observe the time and ..." a reference to the line - "Son, observe the time ..." - on the clock tower at Old St. Mary's.

Colorado tax on energy purchases ending

DENVER?Colorado business leaders are cheering as a temporary 2.9 percent state sales-and-use tax on the industrial purchase of energy comes to an end.

A measure passed by lawmakers in 2010 temporarily eliminated the sales-and-use tax exclusion for energy. Businesses say the tax cost them about $26 million.

The Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry that lobbies for businesses says the tax hurt businesses across the state that need energy to manufacture their products.

Oil Stock Outlook

I was fifty-feet above the deck, swinging back and forth like a metronome on a bungee cord, when Dad asked me about oil stocks.

You see, about a week ago my parents ? who are in their mid-seventies ? were sailing in fair conditions when the loop adjoining their jib sail to their jib halyard snapped.

The jib (the big sail on the front of the boat) came fluttering down while the bitter end of the halyard was stuck at the top of the mast.

This meant, of course, that on a perfectly fine Saturday morning when an intelligent person might be eating pancakes and drinking coffee on the patio, yours truly was dangling like a howler monkey in a bosun's chair, pondering terminal velocity and whether or not a shroud could take off a limb.

Now, I?m not saying that my father is senile, but in recent years he has been known to have his senior moments.

Sometimes he forgets things or scares pedestrians.?

These incidents are not serious?? unless you are betting your life on a man?s rope-handling skills...

So, as I twisted around, bounced off the crosstrees and looked down at a seagull, I pondered oil stocks.

Oil Falls Hard

Oil stocks have fallen more than any other market segment this year.

According to Bloomberg:

The MSCI World Energy Index (MXWO) has declined 9.6 percent this year, more than any other group. The divergence reflects the transformation of an industry where growing consumption of energy has been met with even bigger gains in supply. U.S. crude inventories are the highest since 1990 and natural gas prices have lost 38 percent in 12 months amid a glut spurred by hydraulic fracturing.

When to Sell

I?ve been trading oil for about 15 years now. I love the oil trade because it has a long cycle. You buy when it?s going up and sell when it?s dropping.

It takes a lot of time and money to get those rigs and deals in place... once they are, they stay for a couple of years.

I sold all of my oil plays three months ago for two basic reasons: a global economic slowdown and increased oil inventory.?

Europe is in real trouble. The BRIC countries are slowing fast with big currency hits.

On top of this, the Saudis are pumping at a high rate while the U.S. government is estimating shale formations such as the Bakken in North Dakota will more than double oil output in the next two decades.

If you look at the one-year chart, you can see that oil rallied from September to February based on the idea that the U.S. had turned the corner on the economy.

Once the bulls turned to bears, the price of oil dropped fast.?

That said, we are approaching a support line at $75 for WTI. There is a very good chance we?ll get a dead cat bounce.

One reason might be an active hurricane season. There have been some evacuations from rigs in the Gulf of Mexico due to tropical storm Debby. Gulf hurricanes pushed up the oil price in 2005?? the year of Katrina.

But what my father wanted to know when I landed back on deck was whether oil companies like ExxonMobil (XOM) were now a buy as a value play.?

Of course not, I told him.

The problem is oil companies that had expected to grow earnings 2.2% in 2012 are now expecting earnings to fall 5.8% this year.

Never buy into a contracting market; you buy when the investors have given up and the growth comes back.

When the underlying market expands and no one is paying attention is the time to buy the stock at a discount.

Most newsletters will only tell you when to buy a stock, but with today?s ever volatile market, it?s just as important to know when to sell.

This is far from a comprehensive list, but it works:

1. Even if you are up a lot, selling half of a 100% winner gets your principle back?? and lets you ride the market for free. No one went broke taking profits...
2. A company or industry goes from growth to contraction ? or misses earnings. Always sell a miss!
3. A major management leader quits/gets fired. Smart leaders always flee before the implosion (see: GE?s Jack Welch or Enron?s Kenneth Lay).
4. A company gets bought out. There is no need to wait for the merger to go through for that extra 5%. There's a risk that the deal won?t happen and the stock will drop.
5. The company cuts its dividend.
6. The company has a new business plan.
7. The stock chart breaks below the long-term support line.
8. The stock chart goes parabolic (this is what happened to the oil stocks three months ago).
9. A major lawsuit.
10. You hit your stop-loss.

Avoid the big oil companies unless you are trading the short-term bounce.

Buy companies that save consumers money or benefit from lower oil prices ? companies like airlines, utilities, and miners.

'People Like Us' Is The Anti-Blockbuster, Chris Pine Says

'You can have 'The Avengers' and you can also have films like ours, which are smaller,' he tells MTV News.

If you've been following along with Chris Pine's movie career, the last few films in which he's appeared ("Star Trek," "This Means War," "Unstoppable") might lead you to believe that the man is only action/adventure-oriented. Not so, as demonstrated by his work in his latest film, "People Like Us," which revolves around a man who is tasked with delivering a $150,000 inheritance to a sister (Elizabeth Banks) he has never met.

MTV News recently sat down with Pine to discuss the unique tone and subject matter addressed in the film, which is based on the real-life experiences of its writing team, Alex Kurtzman (who also served as its director), Bob Orci and Jody Lambert, and is not necessarily the type of movie that big studios are gunning to green-light.

"Everyone I've talked to at the studio level who makes these decisions, it seems like it's become an even more bottom-line kind of industry, so movies like 'Paranormal Activity' or something that's made for $3 million and goes on to gross $200 million or the big tentpoles that have the big marketing machines behind it, those are the movies they have to make," Pine said about studios feeling pressured to churn out surefire blockbusters. "It's a real tribute to DreamWorks and to Steven Spielberg. First of all, Alex wrote a great script and as much as the business of show business can sometimes dominate at the end of the day, people in what we do, we love good stories, we are hungry for good stories," he explained of the selling point of "People Like Us." "I think if something like 'The Artist,' a silent film in black-and-white with French actors can do well. I think it's a great sign that in our times you can have both; you can have 'The Avengers' and you can also have films like ours, which are smaller."

Pine said what he hopes people will enjoy in watching "People Like Us" is the fact that it features realistic characters trying to solve realistic problems, in addition to its old-school dramedy vibe influenced by James L. Brooks and Cameron Crowe.

"Alex talks very much about his influences — Brooks, Cameron Crowe, obviously — we always talked about 'Ordinary People' and 'Kramer vs. Kramer.' What's great about those films, there's nothing hooking you other than hopefully a story about a family that you relate to because it looks very much like your own, so it doesn't necessarily mean these people have to go a great many places," he said. " 'Kramer vs. Kramer' is a great example. You get lost in the minutia of this world of a kid making waffles or was it pancakes? We'll have to look that up. That's the world Alex wanted to create. That was the joy, figuring out the everyday living of these characters."

Is Gay Good?

But Hirshman aims to say something stronger, more interesting, and even more provocative than proclaiming victory for the equal rights of gay people. ?The movement succeeded,? she writes, ?uniquely and in large part because, at the critical moments, its leaders made a moral claim.? That claim was not simply a demand to be left alone but an insistence on society?s recognition of their ?virtue? on wholly equal terms with everybody else. Being gay would no longer be something that?s merely tolerated in a liberal state that made room for any kind of freak; LGBT equality would no longer mean the dominant society would hold its nose while granting rights to members of a group it despised. Instead, it would mean embracing gay and transgender people as equally worthy of respect and dignity. ?The gay movement was stuck with two choices,? writes Hirshman about the post-Stonewall era. ?They could ask the society to ignore or tolerate their behavior, immoral or not, in the interests of higher values like freedom or privacy.? Or they could insist that they and their actions were moral, that, in short, ?gay is good.?

Many of today?s women-owned businesses (WOB) are led by recession-tested entrepreneurs whose experiences provide valuable insight into the challenges that may await aspiring small-business owners, according to a new study looking at how women small business owners faired during the ?Great Recession.???Small Business: Lessons of the Recession, the first in-depth look at how women-owned businesses responded to and weathered the recent economic fallout, found that 45 percent of women-owned businesses concentrated primarily on cutting business costs while? 31 percent sought to increase sales. Regardless of which strategy they chose, women business owners indicate that their real volume sales remain lower than when the recession started in 2007.????During the recession, women-owned small businesses did the best they could with the few choices they had available to remain open for business, and they?re stronger today for it,? said Patricia Greene, Chairwoman of the Center for Women?s Business Research. ?The real silver lining is that their resiliency provides valuable lessons on how today?s business owners can adapt to challenges.?

The study was released? by Chase Card Services, a division of JPMorgan Chase & Co.,? the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and the Center for Women?s Business Research.

According to the survey, the resiliency of these women business owners should provide help for the economy. The study reveals that while many women reduced headcount to reduce costs during the recession, they are now starting to hire again. Compared to their worst quarters during the recession, nearly half of WOBs are now increasing headcount (45 percent) and only nine percent report that they are decreasing their staff sizes.? ??This is a significant improvement, given that 36 percent of women small-business owners reduced their payrolls during the recession, with women-owned businesses that have over ten employees more likely to reduce staff than those with fewer than ten employees. Another 40 percent of those surveyed reduced the number of hours worked by employees.???The study revealed important insights about how women-owned businesses (WOBs) are dealing with the recession, including:
??? ???? Focus on cost control: Forty-five percent of WOBs focused on controlling costs in response to economic challenges, while 31 percent concentrated on increasing sales. In retrospect, nearly 60 percent of women are confident in their business decision.
??? ???? Targeting the right customers: Although more than half of WOBs (54 percent) focused on new business among their existing customer base, approximately one in four (23 percent) say they are marketing to a customer base today that is different from their pre-recession targets.
??? ???? Social media as a business tool: Half of WOBs owners now use social media compared to four percent before the recession.? Of those surveyed, 56 percent said social media is ?very important? or ?important? to their business.
??? ???? Finding outside help: The sales record of those who invested in outside help to control costs and/or increase sales (23 percent) proved somewhat better than those who did not.? But always be mindful of what you?re paying for ? a bad investment can cost you more in the long run.
??? ???? Promoting the business through community activities: Thirty-nine percent of WOBs increased their involvement in civic, social or school activities to increase their exposure during the recession and create value for their communities. Although these efforts often do not involve money, don?t lose sight of the value of your time.
??? ???? Working harder: Women business owners are working harder than they were during the height of the Great Recession (41 percent).
?The data indicates that many of women-owned businesses adjusted to the new, volatile circumstances, by making changes to their businesses,? said William Dennis, Senior Research Fellow at the NFIB. ?What is encouraging is that many of these adjustments appear to have been institutionalized.?

The study was a telephone and online survey conducted between March 28 and April 11, 2012. The survey polled a total of 760 business owners, 559 women and 201 men.?

Facebook replaced the email address users chose when they signed up and changed it to a facebook.com address. The Facebook email accounts allow users to communicate with outside email addresses via Facebook.

The changes were first pointed out by bloggers over the weekend and publicized by media outlets Monday, leading to gripes from users, usually on their Facebook pages.

The company said in a statement in April that it was "updating addresses on Facebook to make them consistent across our site."

Facebook spokeswoman Jillian Stefanki said the site is also rolling out a setting that allows people to decide which email addresses to show on their pages.

"Ever since the launch of timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we're extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address," Stefanki said in an email late Monday.

Utah, Colo. fires keep thousands from homes

SALT LAKE CITY?? Firefighters struggled on Saturday to contain wind-stoked wildfires that forced the evacuation of more than 2,000 people in Utah and 1,000 more in Colorado.

Fanned by winds, the so-called Dump Fire about 35 miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah grew to 5,600 acres on Saturday from 4,000 late Friday, and was only about 30 percent contained, Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Cami Lee said.

In neighboring Colorado, firefighters grappling with the High Park Fire, a 75,537-acre blaze burning in steep mountain canyons west of Fort Collins, braced for another round of hot temperatures, low humidity and erratic winds on Saturday.

Late Friday afternoon, wind-stoked flames jumped containment lines and roared through a subdivision, destroying an estimated nine homes, Larimer County Sheriff's Office spokesman John Schulz said.

About 1,000 evacuation notices went out Friday night due to the fire's run.

The additional property losses bring to 200 the number of dwellings lost in the two weeks since the lightning-sparked blaze was first spotted in Colorado.

The Utah fire is burning primarily south and west of Saratoga Springs, where wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour were expected to confound firefighting efforts, Lee said.

On Friday, officials had said up to 9,000 people were evacuated. The substantial change followed a more accurate count, Curry said.

Utah officials will decide later in the day if any residents will be allowed to return home, Lee said.

"We're waiting to see what the winds do," she said. "We have a lot of unburned areas between the fire area and the homes and with the high winds, things can always change quickly."

Some 450 firefighters were on the ground Saturday in Utah, with support from two air tankers and several helicopters, Lee said. One firefighter had suffered minor burns, but no other injuries had been reported.

The Colorado fire is blamed for the death of a 62-year-old grandmother who perished in her mountain cabin. The High Park Fire is already the state's most destructive and the second-largest on record in Colorado.

Incident commander Bill Hahnenberg said crews deployed in the narrow Colorado canyons had to retreat on Friday when the fire blew up and they could no longer protect homes.

"We had a very difficult time," Hahnenberg said.

The fire is burning on private land and on sections of the Roosevelt National Forest.

Although federal authorities say the fire season got off to an early start this summer in parts of the Northern Rockies, the acreage burned nationwide is about on par with the 10-year average for this time of year, according to fire agency records.

The biggest by far is the Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire in New Mexico, that state's largest on record, which has charred almost 300,000 acres. That blaze is nearly 90 percent contained.
